What is the main message of How Successful Law Firms Really Work?

The main message of the book is to help attorneys develop and implement processes to run a successful law firm.  The book addresses everything from technology to office décor.  Our goal was to demystify owning and operating a law firm – the business side of the firm – and to provide a practical and easy to follow roadmap to create a business plan.

Who is your book written for/ Who would get the most out of reading your book?

The book is written for attorneys who want to open a firm, or to improve the efficiency, revenue and quality of life in solo, small, and medium sized firms who either.  The book contains practical tips for anyone interested in owning or managing a solo, small, or medium sized law firm.

What inspired you to write this book?

While developing and growing our own firms, we both realized how beneficial it would have been to learn how law firms operated rather than learning from the school of hard knocks.  We have been teaching Law Practice Management at our alma mater for a number of years, and realized that there was a need for a practical nuts and bolts book on law firm management and operations.  We wanted to give attorneys real world guidance on the steps it takes to create a thriving practice while maintaining a high quality of life.

What do you think will surprise readers most about your book?

I think the readers will be surprised that you don’t have to work weekends and give up family time to run a successful law firm. A good time management along with solid procedures will enable attorneys to be successful without working themselves into the ground.  Our time is our most valuable resource, and it is essential that attorneys learn to the habits necessary to control their time.

What is the most important takeaway readers will get from How Successful Law Firms Really Work?

The practice of law imposes certain ethical and professional standards on law firms that other businesses do not face, but at its core, a law firm is a business that provides legal services.  Our book helps attorneys understand how the different departments (legal services, technology, human resources, office space, etc.) interact and function in a successful law firm.
