Three Benefits of Legal eBooks

Research shows that the majority of attorneys regularly access legal content from locations other than their offices – whether that is from home, while commuting, or while traveling, not to mention the obvious necessity to reference legal content on demand in the courtroom. This modern need to work on the go makes convenience, portability, and agility all key attributes of the media that an attorney uses. Given that, eBooks may seem like a natural fit for most busy, mobile lawyers. In some organizations, however, eBook adoption by legal professionals is not prevalent. Even those who recognize the potential benefits of using eBooks may be slow to embrace them. For those who are considering adopting eBooks but are not yet convinced, we offer three potential eBook benefits that you may not have considered.

You’ll have more flexibility with more tools in your research toolbox.

If all your daily tasks were nails, you would only need a hammer. Just as a toolbox contains many tools, each offering its own advantages depending on the task at hand, the research toolbox is more complete when it offers multiple media options.

There are times when using traditional print books makes more sense than using eBooks. Maybe you want to spread books out on a desk as you are pulling together research and analysis from numerous sources at once, or maybe your eyes are tired after a long day and you don’t want to look at a backlit screen anymore.

Other times, eBooks offer advantages over books, such as when you are:

  • Traveling or commuting, and you want access to multiple titles at one time.
  • Switching frequently between devices (such as using a desktop computer at the office but a tablet when working remotely), and you want your notes, highlighting, and bookmarks to transfer to each device.
  • Conducting research that requires a deeper database or Web search, and you want to be able to easily click back and forth between your book content and related online material.

You’ll save time

You know that your time is a precious resource and you manage it carefully, especially in an era of high client demands and low client loyalty. If you’re using an eBook platform with the right professional features, however, you can save time through efficiencies that the technology creates, such as:

  • Having notes and highlights automatically transfer to new editions so that you don’t have to spend time doing it manually
  • The ability to carry and access multiple titles at once while on an airplane or commuting, so that you can get research done during what would otherwise be downtime
  • Knowing all of your eBook titles are always with you on your electronic device, so you don’t have to stop and make sure you packed the right ones

In larger organizations, every office location can enjoy equal eBook access

This one is for those who are working in larger law organizations that have multiple office locations in different cities, states or countries. If your firm relies primarily on print books, space or budgetary concerns could mean that those in larger offices have easier access to a more robust collection of books. If someone in another office location wants to access the same resources, they may have to endure a delay while the book is shipped to them, while the process incurs cost and time spent by a librarian or administrator responsible for managing the book collection. However, if the firm has invested in an eLibrary, everyone in the organization can have equal access to the entire eBook collection. This can save time for librarians and admins, make resource management more cost effective and efficient, and afford members in every location equal time-saving and flexibility benefits.
